Introduction to the Course

The Strategic Planning Process

A structural guide to the contents of a strategic plan covering a range of analysis, evaluation and documentation. The process starts by understanding the stakeholder requirements through to articulating a clear strategy together with means to monitor its implementation.
Strategic Analysis Understanding the market environment and the business capabilities. A compelling need to understand the markets where the businesses expertise can best be deployed. This will cover techniques to understand the market, competition and the businesses market share for its products and services. The outcome will be a series of strategic choices for which available capital will be the constraint.
Modelling the business choices How to identify the potential outcomes. Best practice principles for building a dynamic model with maximum flexibility for scenarios and alternative assumptions. Power modelling techniques will be shown that can help accelerate development and produce a more robust and user friendly product.
Assumption Profiles The concepts of ‘seed’ and ‘behaviour’ for developing assumption profiles that are used to forecast each aspect of the plan. Techniques to dynamically link revenue, costs, assets and working capital are demonstrated.
Scenario Development How to build a scenario sheet using OFFSET and instantly switch between alternatives. The importance of having only one model to explore all potential options rather than a set of separate models will be explained.
Funding Strips Understand the overall cash flow implication of the strategic plan to identify funding strips that will enable it to be implemented.
Documentation of the plan Summarisation of the chosen plan and presenting the details together with an executive summary.
